Every month I start a new page in my prayer book. I transfer many of the names, eliminate a few, and add some new ones. I notice that the little list on the upper right is getting longer. That’s the list of people who are having a hard time, not in one specific situation, but in a more general way of being and feeling. They may be coping okay with particular situations, but they aren’t feeling good about their lives. Something is missing for them.
For these people in particular, all I need to pray is that God will look after them, provide what they need (I have no idea what that might be). Any judgment on my part completely misses the point. But more than that, it would get in the way of God’s path to them.
Praying this way is such a relief to me, especially for those close to me. In offering them up to God, I have a chance to stop worrying or, worse still, to attempt to fix them. On a personal level, it is a specific way for me to practice surrendering. Sometimes, I even get an inkling into trusting thy will be done.
