Happy are they who consider the poor; the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble (Psalm 41:1). That was the scripture that confronted me this morning during my reading time. I say confronted, because it spoke directly to me about the poor who don’t have much. I didn’t gloss over it like I do with much of scripture.
There are many interpretations and categories of the poor. Jesus speaks of the poor in spirit, but he also speaks of the poor who have no food. Those were the poor that confronted me today.
I live in a bubble; we all live in a bubble. In my bubble I help friends who are be poor in that they can’t drive. I take them to the grocery store or pick up an item that they need; they can afford the food on their table; they just need a little help getting it there.
But what about the poor who can’t afford food? I’ve signed up to help at Open Table, a supper program and food pantry in my community. I’m praying that my bubble will expand.
Open Table’s mission is to provide healthy food, friendship and support to those in need while respecting their privacy and dignity.
