It’s been two years since I first wrote Nicholas’ name in my prayer book. I don’t know Nicholas, but his father asked for prayers for him as ‘payment’ for fixing my windshield wiper one rainy day. “He’s just come back from Afghanistan and he’s having difficulties.”
It is rare for strangers to stay on my prayer book for that long a time. But Nicholas just stays; each month I rewrite his name on the new page. I seem to want to keep him as an individual in my heart. He also represents a large cadre of men and women who have served our country and are now struggling to be create meaningful, positive lives after experience devastation and negativity.
