Today’s the news is all about the death of bin Laden. I must admit that I watch very little news, mainly because it brings out the worst in me and darkens my heart and mind for prayer. So when I saw the cheering and flag waving, I was saddened, confused, conflicted and aware that I don’t know enough to write any kind of critique about the situation.
However, I do know that I want to keep my heart open. I want to see the Christ in everyone involved. Scripture helps as I am reminded of Jesus’ words just before he was arrested when one of his disciples struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.
But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him (Luke 22:51).
Then there is Roman 12:19, the very same scripture read at the royal wedding last Friday, which I quoted in my blog that day.
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” —Romans 12:19
It’s easier to appreciate these words at a wedding than to apply them in response to a violent situation. But I have to keep trying.
