At first glance it seem strange for me, a Protestant, to be lighting candles for people on my prayer list; but I’m getting used to it quickly. From the responses I’ve received, people are grateful to feel that they are not alone, and that the Holy Spirit is present through this simple communal act. Of course the Holy Spirit is a mystery in itself; I don’t try to figure it out but I know when it is present, and without a doubt it is when I light a candle.
Today I lit a candle at Santa Maria del Flore (the Duomo) for a friend and her family. From the photograph you can see that I wasn’t the only one praying in this way. As I lit the candle I felt solidarity with all those who were seeking God’s peace.
