This message of Jesus pierces me every time I read it. Why? Because I have been give much, and entrusted with much, all of my life. I've enjoyed comfort, food, clothing, shelter, friends, family, education, and on and on.
As a Christian I find no excuse or reason to ignore Jesus' message. As a human being I don't always want to follow it; I want to forget it when it doesn't suit my life style.
What about the message Jesus must have heard as a young boy from the prophet Micah? It is one, embraced by many (all?) faith traditions, and one I can more easily give lip service. He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (6.8). I can find a little wiggle room.
But in the message in Luke, Jesus gives no wiggle room to Christians who want to follow him. He is asking us to give up attitudes and ways that have been given and entrusted to us that get in the way of what the Lord requires and demands of us. I know what mine are. Do you know what yours are?
