Daily Bread, by Denise Levertov

          Daily Bread

A gull far-off
rises and falls, arc of a breath,
two sparrows pause on the telephone wire,
chirp a brief interchange, fly back to the ground,
the bus picks up one passenger and zooms on up the hill,
across the water the four poplars
conceal their tremor, feet together, arms pressed to their sides,
behind them the banked conifers dark and steep;
my pear tree drops a brown pear from its inaccessible height
into the bramble and ivy tangle, grey sky
whitens a little, now one can see vague forms of cloud
penciled lightly across it.
This is the day that the Lord hath made,
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

There are nights when I experience faith as anguish;
There is doubt, madness too.
In this solitary love of a God
who is at the same time
Absent and all absorbing.
…I hope; but what I hope for is out of sight…
that tortures me as I face him.
All the torment has direction and meaning there
Where it is hidden in God, as though coming to birth:
JOY, yes, but wrapped in NIGHT.

Healing prayer

Spirit of the living God present with us now,
Enter you, body, mind and spirit,
And heal you of all that harms you,
In Jesus’ name, Amen

This prayer is said each Tuesday evening at the Service of Healing at the Abby on the Isle of Iona in Scotland. It is incredibly powerful to hear these four lines repeated over and over again as people go up for the laying on of hands or as names are offered in prayer.
When I am praying for others, I find this prayer helps me to stay focused and to release my own judgments about the situation. I find it very comforting to pray this for myself. I’ve also repeated it rhythmically while walking a labyrinth.

Parable from the Upanishads

In the body there is a little shrine.
In that shrine there is a lotus.
In that lotus there is a little space.
What is it that lives in that little space?
The whole universe is in that little space,
because the creator,
the source of it all,
is in the heart of each one of us
.

                     Parable from the Upanishads
